How the filament calculator works

The calculator uses filament density and diameter to convert weight into approximate filament length. It then applies your spool price, spool weight, quantity and waste allowance to estimate the total material you need.

Why add a waste allowance?

Skirts, purge lines, supports and occasional failed prints use extra filament. A small allowance can make planning more realistic, especially for long or repeated prints.

Weight-to-length is an estimate

Actual density varies by manufacturer, additives and moisture. For purchasing or quoting, your slicer's reported weight is usually the best starting point.

How do I calculate filament cost for a print?

Start with the filament weight reported by your slicer. Divide that weight by the spool's net filament weight, then multiply by the spool price. Add a waste allowance when you expect supports, purge material or failed prints.

How many meters are in 1 kg of 1.75 mm filament?

The answer depends on material density. PLA, PETG, ABS and TPU have different densities, so the same 1 kg weight does not produce exactly the same filament length.

Should supports and purge material be included?

Yes. If your slicer estimate does not already include every source of waste, use the waste allowance so the material plan is less likely to underestimate a real print job.

Can I use this for 2.85 mm filament?

Yes. Select 2.85 mm as the filament diameter. The weight-to-length conversion accounts for the larger cross-sectional area.
